Sidetrack story

NaNoWriMo is over for this year. I exceeded my expectations greatly.

I however ended up with tunnel vision. As much as I tried, I couldn't think of anything writing wise that wasn't connected to my book.

So, I forced myself to pick a random picture on my phone and write about it.

As luck would have it, it was an image of a pigs head.

I genuinely found it at the end of some bungalows while walking dogs doing my day job.

I found it weird making a story about a photo, but I will more than likely do it in future more.

Must say my writing style changed alot midway after I had a 2 day break from it. Turned into some weird sci-fi ending, something I really wasn't expecting, but enjoyed.

Yesterday I attempted to type up 7 pages of scrawl and it took me around 5 hrs. I hammered twitter and Facebook alot while blasting AC-DC in a well hidden procrastination session.

Now it's time to edit. I have no idea what I'm doing really. But rereading as I typed it up, I'm aware I need to polish turd into a gorgeous gem.

Wish me luck.

NaNoWriMo update

I've been soooo busy writing my book, my blog was forgotten about.

I may not have written as much as alot of people out there. But I'm happy as a pig in muck, with 16,656 words.

This time last month was a big fat zero amount of words.

Proud as punch.

Not only that, I have an actual storyline. I'm buzzing. Yesterday, I decided to bring in an additional main character. So I wrote a segment introducing him. Whether he stays as planned or disappears at the end of the sequence, who knows.

What hasn't happened yet, which is a bummer, I haven't used poison to kill any one. Three people dead. No poisoning, nor my heavily researched body disposal methods.

Some would say this was a waste of time but not me. Writing has given me a new lease of life. My mind is constantly flowing with ideas. Granted, some are shit, but some if I can pull it off will be great. For me anyway.

I will finish this book. All started on pen and paper. At some point, I will have to type it up. 16 thousand words is going to take a very long time.

Possible, no, definitely longer than it took me to scribble it down.

My forensic online twitter friend (actually not sure if she wants it known she is helping me, so anonymous she will remain for now), is a great help. I send her some questions, she replies with quick scientific approach.

I hope I can repay her at some stage but who knows. Would she have any pet related questions relevant to her book?

Boys and Girls, good night for now, and stay scribbling.

Coming together.

Finally, my first week of handwritten NaNoWriMo scrawling notes has developed a structure.

My 1st complete murder scene, surprisingly quickly led to the 2nd. I found  a storyline link, which I hadn't planned. I hate to waste freebies so I ran with it. And I feel goooood.

I have quickly realised you can plan and plan til your brain explodes, but end up side stepping at the earliest opportunity. This now means, I can't use my planned plans as planned. What a waste of time.

But if I don't plan. How do I get to the sidestepping stage?

Arghhhhh. What a vicious circle this is. So, I had better plan some more.

After a week, something became very obvious. I'm using a lot of paper, with a very high chance of losing my notes if I don't type them up onto my laptop.

I might just photograph every page and auto upload to Dropbox for now. How long do you think this lot would take to photo?

NaNoWriMo

Been a while since I wrote anything here..
I haven't stopped scribbling. I do it on paper now. I seem to get more done and in a quicker pace. Phones, tablets are away from me while I write. If I can't see it or even reach it, I can't use it.

I joined the writing collective of National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) under the name Uncle Eric. If you are part of it, feel free to buddy up.

I forgot about day 1, but managed to write for the remaining days. So far accused 4997 words out of the target of 50000.

I'm not going to bullshit myself, I don't have that much free time to reach that. I'm happy to be taking part in it though. It is pushing me on and I'm throughly enjoying it.

Today I wrote my 1st scene entirely in one go. Genuinely chuffed with myself, even if I wrote start, end then middle.

I abandoned lined paper to write on. Don't know why I find it hard to use, I just do. So blank printing paper it is, and I'm using loads.

Last night a fellow NaNoWriMo participant contacted me. Small chat but lead to great enthusiasm from me today.

I have to admit after 4 hrs of writing, my eyes lost all focus, my brain I'm sure physically hurt and my right wrist went limp and crampy.

One day at a time, I will get this book written. But I'm enjoying the ride.

Book update

Unbelievably, my ideas are vast. I think I must have bottled stuff up for years and its all flooding out.

In fact, I have too many ideas, and my brain is jumping in circles trying to to sort out a nice flow between them.

Research is taking me places never dreamed possible. Might end up being a medical Dr after all this.

Murder, body disposal..... Oooo please nobody read my search history.

And. I have also included 2 of my customers into my book. Part fact, part fiction. Its possible I might just turn that into a short story, and it drags main book. into a totally different story

The case of the missing toy

I set myself a writing prompt. One of writing a story explaining the photo attached.
Well here it is.

CSI Chicken - Fowl Crime Division

Every night, after the hens put themselves to bed and the automatic pophole cover closes when it gets dark, Dad goes out and fills the yellow treat ball with cracked corn. He does this so when  they get up, they can all kick it about for early morning exercise. It works by dropping corn  out of 1 of the 2 holes when it rolls across the floor.

Last night was no exception.

Across the garden, the 2 rabbits, Rupert and Apple,  always watch this, and find it funny watching the hens daily exercise routine.
They both decided it would be even more fun if they got up and the chickens had no ball to play with. So they hatched out a plan between them to steal it.
Later that night, once the hens were safely tucked up in their coop, the plan was set in motion. Rupert knew how to unlock the latch on their cage. He rests his front left paw on Apples right shoulder, and slides his right paw through the gap and unhooks the latch.
Freedom. They now put their fun plan into action.

Over the last few weeks, under the cover of night, both Rupert and Apple, had escaped from their hutch regularly. They had moved a small log, which was resting against the chicken run wall and dug a tunnel into the hen house under it. On the inside, they lift the square piece of wood which the food bowl was on top of like a trap door.

Once in, they easily find the yellow treat ball. Dad normally puts it in the same place, under the stairs to the chicken house.  Apple grabs the ball in her mouth, jumps down the hole, through the tunnel and up out the other side into the garden. It was Rupert's job to cover their tracks. He slowly lowered the square piece of wood back into place on the inside, and carefully rolled the small log over the entrance on the outside.

The treat ball was too large for Apples mouth for her to hold for long, so she puts it down on the grass. She decided to roll it down the garden instead of carrying it. She nudged it with her nose until it rolled to the flower bed next to the edge of the lawn.

Apple being the smallest of the two rabbits, jumped into the flower bed and dug a hole under the grass, making sure not to damage Mam’s plants, while Rupert stood guard keeping an eye out. It didn't take her long to dig a hole big enough to roll the treat ball in, then Apple covered it over with the soil, using her back legs.

The naughty rabbits laughed to themselves as they ran back to the open hutch door and carefully relocked the latch. All they had to do was wait for morning.

At 6am, the automatic door to the hen house started to open, slowly it raised and the daylight came in. All 5 hens yawned, stretched and flapped their wings, jumped down from their perches and waited in line to go outside and have some fun.
One by one they climb down the wooden ramp and hop on to the floor.
Where's the ball, they all wonder, looking around frantically. None of them can find it. They start to panic, this has never happened before, they always have a ball to play with when they get up.

They squawk loudly, for nearly half an hour. Mam hears them and wonders what's up, she goes out early with their breakfast to check in on them. She opens the chicken runs door and unusually all 5 burst past her legs into the garden.

Zelda, the boss chicken, quickly spots a few pieces of corn near the log outside the coop fencing. Her head looks up, and sees a trail of corn leading down the garden. As she follows it, she calls out an order to the others NOT to eat the corn. They reluctantly agree but are clearly not happy that they can't eat that tasty yellow corn.

The naughty rabbits are lying down looking out of their cage, watching the hens running around looking silly. They hadn't realised when they rolled the ball down the garden, corn was falling out of the holes leaving a trail behind them.

Zelda stops at the last piece of corn and is very confused. Why does the corn stop? Where is the treat ball?

She squawks loudly. Her voice commands the others to join her and do the same. All 5, stand yelling staring at the same part of the grassy floor.

Apple and Rupert can see and hear everything. They find it too funny and roll on the floor of the cage laughing at them.

Mam walks down to hens, and the hens get louder. She can't understand why they are making this noise. They have never done this before. They don't stop crying out and all pace around in the same area, as if stamping their feet, while looking at the ground.

Eventually mam grabs the garden spade, she knows it's something to do with grass but has no idea what. Guessing they will not be quiet until they see under the grass, she starts to dig. As soon as the shovel cuts into the soil, the hens go completely quiet. Mam keeps moving the spade, cutting a few pieces of turf loose. One by one she carefully lifts a piece. Zelda's head was very close to the ground examining carefully under each bit of grass as it lifted. She is only interested in finding the corn in the treat ball. However Ruby and Tamitha happily gobble up all the worms that pop up.

When Zelda sees the yellow ball, she squawks, flaps her wings and does a little happy dance. Mam bends over and fully lifts out the grass sod exposing the treat ball. Mam is very confused, she has no idea why or how the ball ended up under the grass. All the hens jump for joy, and the rabbits are still rolling about laughing.

Hiding the evidence even if non existent

As I embark on writing stories, especially about murder, I of course need to know what I am talking about technically. So finally all three books I ordered from Amazon have arrived.

Let's be truthful from the off. If I can find a second hand book for 7p with a little postage and it's cheaper than brand new, then this budding trainee murder writer will buy it.

The Forensic Casebook arrived, let's say with a grubby cover. Grubby enough for me to wonder who its previous owner was.
Who buys Forensic books? Scientists, researchers, students, potential murderers, actual murderers hiding the evidence?

Whoa there. While farfetched, very slim chance the latter could be true. So, in a true moment of paranoia, I get the antibacterial wipes out and give the covers some hard elbow grease. As current owner of the book, I refuse to take the fall for any crimes the previous reader committed.

Nugget the Chicken

Last year we bought some chickens, I say we, I did. To me they are therapeutic, they really destress me. Any eggs they lay are just a nice tasty bonus.

Our Homemade Coop at bottom of the garden,  looking good even though I can't usually knock a nail in straight.

As with everything, small things happen in life. Here is a small verse I just found in my notes.

" There once a hen named Nugget.

Who's eggs we hoped would taste nice.

But as she got older, he started to crow.

Any louder, he'll be in a curry with  rice. "

Why am I blogging?

This blog will be work in progress. Both in terms of its appearance and my ramblings as I write. To me it will be a diary so I can chart my personal progress. I do have another blog but thats more business related for my non writing stuff. One day I may bring them under one roof, but for now, keeping my head separated into 2 sides, seems best.

My main area of focus right now, is  concentrating on reading up on alot of forensic science. How and why things happen to the human body under a variety of different scenarios. Then use it creatively for murders.

But, I won't be only writing about that. I bore easily. My mind wanders. I'm tinkering with stories for kids too.

This will be my journey from the beginning. If I write anything, I will put it on the blog. Good or bad.

Book wise, via the magic of twitter, a true life forensic anthropologist (I may have the title wrong but she is an expert in her field) has offered to assist me with sciency stuff. Sooo, so, kind of her.

I have so many ideas but this writing lark is totally new to me. I think my last essay written (non degree or work related) must have been back in 1990. Come on brain engage.

Please feel free to comment on my posts. If you find any good websites that maybe of use to me, please let me know.

Thank you

AB

PS - While I'm not hiding my true identity, I am just currently not broadcasting it yet. Just until I find my feet.

I have started my book. Yippee

Like everything I start, it takes me months to get going.

But, my book is definitely off the starter blocks.

The amount of reading into poisons I have done is scary. God help me if someone I know is actually murdered with poison. I'll be definitely suspect no 1.

As I have hinted, my book will be about a murderer who uses poison. The man currently is a Dog Walker who snaps.

I'm writing this purely for fun and self therapy. If I get enough confidence when finished, I may release it into the wild.

But now, back to Cyanide and Puffer fish research.
